The First Great Lesson

Where did the stars come from? And the Sun? How was our Earth created? And what about the rest of the Universe?

Montessori’s First Great Lesson is the elementary child’s first introduction to the sciences. It is a lesson we cherish dearly for its ability to spark interest, promote discovery, and deepen children’s understanding of the cosmic connections throughout the Universe.

Our telling of the First Great Lesson begins before life, before planet Earth, and before the Sun and the stars. As the history of the Universe unfolds, we share a series of interactive demonstrations and visuals that make the story into an experience.

What you’ll learn:

Since the beginning, humankind has wondered about our world. In this lesson, you will discover what people think happened when it all started, and how the Universe and the Earth came to be. Moving through the lesson, you will also learn about the vastness of the Universe, the properties of matter, and the formation of Earth.

Questions to ponder:

  • Were there always stars in the sky? If not, where did they come from?
  • Has the Universe been around forever? What about our planet Earth?
  • What is nothing?
